Most people in Madison and Huntsville associate tornado season with spring. Alabama, however, has a second severe weather season that typically runs from early November into mid-December. With that stretch only weeks away, fall is the right time to look at your homeowners policy and make sure it still fits your home and your family.

Understanding Alabama's Second Season

The Office of the Alabama State Climatologist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville notes that the state sees a secondary peak in severe weather in late fall, especially November. Warm air can still reach the state as cold fronts begin sweeping through, creating conditions for damaging thunderstorms and tornadoes. Much of the storm damage across Alabama comes from severe thunderstorm winds, so those warnings deserve the same respect as tornado warnings. Preparing for fall should look just like preparing for spring.

Review Your Wind and Hail Deductible

Many homeowners policies in Alabama carry a separate deductible for wind and hail, sometimes calculated as a percentage of the home's insured value rather than a flat dollar amount. That difference can mean a much larger out-of-pocket cost after a storm than people expect. Look at your declarations page now so the number is not a surprise later. Your agent can explain how your deductible works and whether an adjustment makes sense for your budget.

Check Your Dwelling Coverage

Construction and material costs have climbed in recent years, and a policy written several years ago may not reflect what it would cost to rebuild your home today. Renovations, additions, and upgrades can also change replacement cost. Reviewing dwelling coverage limits helps make sure a major loss does not leave a gap. Coverage for other structures, personal property, and additional living expenses is worth reviewing at the same time.

FORTIFIED Roofs and Insurance Discounts

Alabama is a national leader in stronger roofing. Homes that earn a FORTIFIED designation, a standard developed by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, receive discounts on the wind portion of their homeowners premium. The Alabama Department of Insurance's Strengthen Alabama Homes program offers grants of up to $10,000 toward FORTIFIED upgrades when funding is available in participating counties. Many policies also offer a FORTIFIED endorsement that can help pay for an upgraded roof if yours is replaced after a covered loss.

Document Your Home Before the Storm

A home inventory makes the claims process faster and more accurate. Walk through each room recording video, open closets and drawers, and photograph serial numbers on electronics and appliances. Store the files in cloud storage so they survive even if your home does not. Keep your policy number and claims contact information saved in your phone as well.

A Local Agent Who Knows Alabama Weather

Kevin Baggett is an Alfa Insurance agent with an office on Sullivan Street in Madison. Alfa serves Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi and offers home, auto, life, renters, umbrella, watercraft, farm, and business coverage. Working with a local agent means having someone nearby to review your coverage before storm season and to help you through a claim afterward. Kevin can walk through your policy, explain discounts you may qualify for, and help you decide which changes make sense.

Prepare Now, Not After the Warning

Severe weather in Alabama can develop quickly, especially in the fall when many people are not expecting it. A short coverage review today, along with a family safety plan and more than one way to receive warnings, means you are ready when the next storm system moves through North Alabama.
