In Rocket City Times territory, you don't have to look far to find a business built by a woman who decided to bet on herself. Alabama is home to well over 150,000 women-owned businesses, and Huntsville alone accounts for thousands of them, employing your neighbors and shaping the shops and restaurants you already love.

Who They Are

Downtown Huntsville's Clinton Row Market is home to Yala Avenue, where owner Suzana Richardson designs jewelry and home decor by hand, blending traditions from her native Nepal with a Huntsville sensibility. In Historic Madison, The Cotton Gin Boutique brings inclusive, size-diverse women's fashion to a charming small-town storefront. Sparrows Florist and Good Company Cafe, led by native Huntsvillian Angela Ozbolt, round out a growing roster of women-led storefronts across both cities.

Their Stories

You'll notice a pattern if you talk to these owners: many started small, some out of a spare room or a pop-up table, before earning a permanent storefront. Richardson built Yala Avenue around handcrafted pieces made by Nepalese artisans and designed locally, turning a personal connection into a full-time business. Others, like Ozbolt, grew up in the area and built their business around serving the community they already knew, learning payroll, permitting, and inventory management along the way.

Why Supporting Them Matters

Every purchase at one of these businesses keeps money circulating through Huntsville and Madison rather than flowing out to a national chain. Women-owned businesses here also drive job creation across defense, medical, retail, and hospitality sectors, and the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber's Women's Business Council exists specifically to help these owners mentor one another and keep growing.

How to Find Them

The Huntsville/Madison County Chamber directory is a reliable starting point for locating women-owned businesses by category, and the Chamber's annual Small Business Awards specifically recognize woman-owned honorees each fall. Downtown Huntsville events and the Clinton Row Market are also good places to meet these owners face to face.
