Spring farmers market season is already underway in Madison and Huntsville, and the region's market network is as strong as ever. From the Madison City Farmers Market — now open on Saturday mornings — to the downtown evening markets that kick off in May, North Alabama's local food scene gives residents direct access to the farms and makers that define the Tennessee Valley's agricultural character. Here is a guide to what is open now and what is coming in the weeks ahead.
Madison City Farmers Market: Open Now on Saturday Mornings
The Madison City Farmers Market opened its 2026 season on April 11 and is currently running every Saturday from 8 AM to noon at 1088 Hughes Road at Trinity Baptist Church. Everything at this market is grown or made in the Tennessee Valley — a producer-only commitment that means shoppers are talking directly to the people who raised what they're buying.
Current spring offerings include fresh vegetables and fruits, cheeses, eggs, grass-fed meats, fresh herbs, honey, jams and relishes, home-baked goods, and handmade artisan items. The market runs through September with fall hours extending into November. Special seasonal events throughout the summer include a Strawberry Festival in May, Peach Jam in July, and a Watermelon Crawl in August.
Bailey Cove Farmers Market: South Huntsville's Saturday Staple
The Bailey Cove Farmers Market at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 12200 Bailey Cove Road SE, opened its season on April 18 and runs Saturdays from 8 AM to noon through early September. The market features fruits and vegetables grown and supplied by North Alabama and southern Tennessee farmers, along with artisan breads, jams, jellies, eggs, meats, flowers, and plants.
It is one of the few markets in the area that participates in the Alabama Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, matching SNAP benefits with market dollars for qualifying shoppers.
Greene Street Market and Clift Farm: Opening in May
Two additional markets will open in the coming weeks, rounding out the spring and summer calendar for Madison-area residents. The Greene Street Market at Nativity at 304 Eustis Avenue in downtown Huntsville opens May 7, running Thursdays from 3 to 7 PM through August, with adjusted September and October hours.
This producer-only market features organic produce, local meats and dairy, artisan breads, honey, fresh herbs and flowers, cooking demonstrations, and live music each week — making it the most community-oriented evening market option in the region. Clift Farm Farmers Market at 461 John Henry Way in Madison opens May 5, running Tuesdays from 4 to 7 PM through late October, adding live music, yard games, and face painting to a farm-to-table vendor mix that works particularly well for families with children.
Why Shop Local This Spring
The case for visiting a farmers market in spring goes beyond produce quality, though that case is compelling on its own — spring strawberries, early lettuces, fresh herbs, and the first asparagus of the season simply cannot be matched by conventional retail supply chains.
Shopping local at Madison and Huntsville area markets also directly supports the farms, small businesses, and artisans that form an essential part of the region's economic character. North Alabama's farm network has been growing steadily alongside its aerospace and tech economy, and the farmers' markets are where those two threads of community life most visibly intersect.
