When Lincoln Village Ministry entered the Lincoln community in 2002, the neighborhood surrounding downtown Huntsville was struggling with poverty, crime, and a profound lack of opportunity. Twenty-plus years later, the transformation underway there runs through every dimension of community life — and none more deliberately than education. Lincoln Academy and Little Linc, the ministry's K-8 school and preschool, are not simply located in the community. They are central to the community's change.
Little Linc: Where It Starts
Little Linc serves 3- and 4-year-old children through a preschool program that weaves biblical integration with the Montessori method — an approach that respects the developmental pace of young learners while building strong early literacy and numeracy foundations. Daily small groups focus on literacy and Handwriting Without Tears, a research-backed curriculum designed to make early writing accessible and confidence-building for young children.
Parent Power Classes run alongside the children's programming, recognizing that school readiness is a family project as much as an individual one. The goal of Little Linc is kindergarten readiness — and the children who move through it arrive at Lincoln Academy with a measurable head start.
Lincoln Academy: A School Built Around the Whole Child
Lincoln Academy serves K-8th-grade students, is accredited by AdvancED, has certified educators, and offers a 12-to-1 student-teacher ratio that provides the individual attention needed to transform struggling readers into confident ones. Every student at Lincoln Academy is on scholarship — tuition is not a barrier to enrollment, which means the families the ministry serves are not filtered out by cost.
The results are measurable: students improve an average of at least one grade level in reading and 1.5 grade levels in math each year. A WellStone counselor is on campus, 100% of parents participate in conferences, and STEM opportunities, field trips, arts, music, clubs, and technology round out an educational experience that is genuinely comprehensive.
High School Support and the Summer Program
Lincoln Village Ministry's educational commitment does not end at 8th grade. High school students receive continued support, including a student success advocate, private school scholarship options, college tours and application assistance, and an 85% graduation rate that reflects the depth of that ongoing investment.
The 7-week summer program for K-8th grades keeps academic momentum through the summer months while adding swim lessons, an overnight camp, weekly field trips, and nutritional support — and Lincoln Academy graduates return as junior counselors, creating a pipeline of mentorship that runs through the entire program.
Why Education Is the Cornerstone
The families Lincoln Village Ministry serves are working hard in difficult circumstances — single parents, limited incomes, and a neighborhood that was not designed to support upward mobility. A safe school where children are nourished, encouraged, and valued for who they are in Christ does more than teach reading and math.
It gives children a stable place to belong during the hours when their parents are working, and it gives parents the confidence that their children are in good hands. That combination — stability, education, and genuine care — is what makes Lincoln Academy and Little Linc so important to the ministry's broader mission.
