A roof over your head matters. But a roof alone does not change the trajectory of a family’s life. Lincoln Village Ministry has understood this since 2002 — which is why affordable housing in Huntsville’s Lincoln community has always been paired with something more: a structured, intentional program designed to help families build the skills, habits, and financial foundation to eventually leave transitional housing and own their own homes. That program is called Evolve.
Who the Evolve Program Serves
The families in Lincoln Village Ministry’s housing are working. Every resident is employed, with a median family income of $21,000. Ninety-five percent are single parents doing everything they can for their children in conditions that most people do not fully appreciate. The 2 to 3-bedroom homes with 2 bathrooms rent for $300 to $375 per month — intentionally below market rate to create breathing room.
But the goal of the Evolve program is not to keep families in that housing indefinitely. It is a 4 to 5-year transitional model with a clear target: help each family save at least $5,000 for a down payment on a home of their own.
What Evolve Actually Provides
Evolve wraps around each resident family with a range of practical, relational, and financial supports:
- Personal mentoring — regular meetings with neighborhood coordinators for goal-setting and accountability, the kind of consistent, trusted adult relationship that makes the difference between a plan and a plan that actually gets followed
- Faith and Finances courses — financial literacy education that addresses budgeting, saving, debt, and the practical steps toward homeownership, rooted in a values framework
- Jobs for Life — job training programming that connects residents with workforce skills and employment opportunities, helping families increase their earning potential during their time in the program
- Rent incentive program — $25 off monthly rent when paid on time, building the habit of consistent, on-schedule payment that landlords and mortgage lenders need to see
- Matched savings accounts — after one year of residency, families begin building matched savings toward their $5,000 down payment goal
- Continuing education support — GED classes, college course assistance, and rent discounts for residents enrolled in approved educational programs
- Mental health counseling — available at discounted rates, with Lincoln Village covering the first several appointments
The Outcome the Ministry Is Working Toward
Many families who complete the Evolve program move off government assistance entirely during their time in the ministry. They buy homes. They move into careers rather than jobs. Their children, educated at Lincoln Academy and Little Linc, grow up with a fundamentally different experience of what is possible. The ministry describes its work as a holistic transformation, and Evolve is where that transformation becomes concrete and measurable, one family at a time.
A Model Worth Replicating
Lincoln Village Ministry has built something genuinely proven in the Lincoln community, and the vision does not stop there.
