The holiday season in Madison and Huntsville brings magic to North Alabama. From sparkling botanical gardens to charming neighborhood displays, there’s something special waiting around every corner. Whether you’re planning a cozy family drive or a festive walking tour, these light shows will make your 2025 holidays unforgettable.

Galaxy of Lights Celebrates 30 Years

The Galaxy of Lights at Huntsville Botanical Garden turns 30 this year and remains the crown jewel of holiday displays in the area. This beloved tradition has earned the number two spot in USA Today’s 10Best Botanical Garden Holiday Lights for the past two years, and visitors from across the region know why.

Planning the event takes a full year, starting in January with design meetings and building displays by August. The result? Millions of lights spread across the garden in animated displays, featuring a reimagined icicle forest, interactive globe play areas, and new Dreamscape zones.

You can experience the magic through walking nights from November 14 through December 27, or take a drive from December 7 to 31. Special options include dog-walking nights, where your furry friends can join the fun, and the Evergreen Express tram tour, which offers a 45-minute guided journey with free hot chocolate.

Kids especially love the snow stations scattered throughout the walking trail, plus hot chocolate and cookie stops along the way. The sensory-friendly hours on November 30 and December 3 make the experience accessible for everyone in the community.

Drive-Through Delights at Toyota Field

The Rocket City Trash Pandas Christmas Light Show transforms Toyota Field into a winter wonderland you can explore from your car. Drive through more than a mile of Christmas lights, then park and walk around different stations in the stadium to enjoy hot cocoa, make s’mores, and create crafts. The show features nearly one million lights, interactive displays, festive food and drinks, character visits, and igloo add-ons. It runs nightly from November 21 through December 28, from 5 to 9 PM.

Tinsel Trail Takes Over Big Spring Park

Downtown Huntsville’s Tinsel Trail has expanded across Church Street into Big Spring Park West. Around 400 trees will decorate the park for the holiday season, with each tree sponsored and decorated by local corporations, groups, or families. This free community display runs November 28 through December 31 and includes pop-up versions of the Downtown Craft Coffee Trail and food trucks.

Neighborhood Treasures in Madison

Madison families have created their own holiday magic with spectacular home displays. The Woodard Family Lights on 228 Knotting Place features synchronized lights dancing to holiday music. Tune your radio to 97.1 FM and watch roughly from 5 to 9 PM each night, with the display visible from your car. The homeowner suggests visiting on weeknights early in the season to avoid traffic.

The Boyer Family Dancing Christmas Tree Show in Moores Mill showcases over 25,000 lights with a dozen animated Christmas trees hosted by two talking trees named Chris and Christine. Shows run nightly until 9 or 10 PM, except during rain.

Historic Charm in Twickenham

Step back in time at Huntsville’s Twickenham historic district, where 19th-century homes wear wreaths, garlands, and thousands of lights. Park near the Weeden House Museum and stroll the neighborhood streets to see how these architectural gems celebrate the season.

Capturing the Perfect Shot

Want to photograph these displays? Arrive early in the season when crowds are lighter. Turn off your headlights to avoid blinding other viewers and keep your radio at a reasonable volume to respect neighbors. For walking displays, bring a tripod for steady shots in low light, and experiment with longer exposures to capture the full glow of the lights.

The volunteers and homeowners who create these displays spend countless hours bringing joy to the community. From nine staff members and 20-plus volunteers who engineer and build everything in-house at the Botanical Garden to individual families who transform their yards, these dedicated people make the season brighter for everyone.

Madison and Huntsville’s holiday lights offer something for every family, whether you prefer the comfort of your car or the wonder of walking through twinkling displays. Bundle up, grab some hot chocolate, and create memories that will last long after the decorations come down.
