As we enter the first full week of May, our community prepares to honor those who guide, inspire, and educate—our teachers. Teacher Appreciation Week 2025, running from May 4–8, is a nationally celebrated tradition that invites us all to recognize the incredible contributions of educators to our lives, schools, and society.
Organized by the National Education Association (NEA), this celebration culminates on National Teacher Day, May 6, giving communities a dedicated moment to express heartfelt thanks.
A Celebration Led by the NEA
The NEA leads this important initiative, calling it a time for “honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives.” To help communities participate, they offer a toolkit packed with:
-
Printable achievement certificates
-
Social media kits
-
Themed contests
-
Gift guides to make appreciation personal and impactful
These tools empower parents, students, and schools to show their gratitude meaningfully.
📜 The History of Teacher Appreciation
The roots of this celebration stretch back to 1944, when Arkansas teacher Mattye White Woodridge campaigned for a national day honoring educators. With the support of Eleanor Roosevelt, the first Teacher Appreciation Day was recognized in 1953. Though temporary at first, the NEA and state educators secured a permanent observance. In 1985, the NEA established the first full Teacher Appreciation Week, a tribute that continues to grow in impact.
Teaching, one of the oldest professions, has long been respected—from Confucius in 561 BC, to the ancient Greeks, to the Pilgrims, and beyond. Its evolution mirrors our deepening understanding of education’s role in societal progress.

📊 The Impact and the Challenges
Teachers work an average of 53 hours a week, much of it outside traditional school hours. An astonishing 94% of educators spend their own money on classroom supplies, highlighting their commitment. Despite financial obstacles, 97% report that supportive leadership, not salary, is what keeps them in the profession.
Educators are recognized as the second most impactful contributors to societal well-being, after military personnel—a reflection of how deeply their work affects us all. This week reminds us to not just say “thank you,” but to show it in ways that match their everyday efforts.
❤️ Let’s Make It Count
Teacher Appreciation Week is more than just a tradition—it’s a vital reminder to recognize the individuals who light the path for our children’s futures. Let’s show up, speak up, and give back.
